Let’s Make Valentine’s Day a Little Greener

When we think of Valentine's Day, red hearts, chocolates, and roses come to mind, but we’d like to show you a few ways to make it just a little greener and more loving to the environment.

Give flowers. Or not!
If you insist on giving flowers this year, how about a locally grown houseplant instead? There are many flowering varieties available and they make a lovely year-round gift which can add vibrancy to a home or office. Also, if you purchase a plant close to where you live, you’re not contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions of air shipping which is common with imported flowers.

Give a recyclable card.
Did you know that cards with little or no glitter are much easier to recycle? Many greeting cards are also printed on recycled paper, so keep an eye out for those when buying. Purchasing a locally-made card not only helps your community business but it also prevents the extra driving, flying, etc. for a card that has to be shipped in because it’s manufactured farther away.

Make your own gift.
What if you decided that you’d make your own card or gift this year? Sending an e-card will help save the trees or you could write a simple love note and decorate it with anything you already have around the house. You don’t have to get too fancy - just get creative and see what you can come up with.

Most everybody loves chocolate.
For many people, chocolate is a delicious treat, and it’s just not Valentine’s Day without it. However, much of the chocolate made is produced in some of the most economically disadvantaged regions of the world. One solution would be to purchase Fair Trade chocolate and cocoa, because farmers are guaranteed a fair price. You’ll also feel better knowing that they are following good environmental practices.

Romance is about spontaneity, inventiveness, and the personal touch. Don’t forget to reuse and recycle whatever you can from your gift giving, so we can all enjoy a beautifully green Valentine’s Day.
